Thistle Fact and Lore

The thistle flower is the national flower of Scotland. The thistle signifies hardiness and endurance. Finches and other small birds enjoy eating the dark brown seeds of the thistle and help propagate the plant to the chagrin of many homeowners.

Folk stories tell of an army making a stealthy advance upon a slumbering Scottish army. The army was awakened by the painful cries of their attackers who trampled the thorny thistle. The Scotsmen were thus alerted to the attack and lived to tell the tale.
