The important thing is not to stop questioning.
The best writers seek surprise, delight in what they do
not expect to see. They come to the story with a focus, an expectation,
but they treasure the contradiction, the traitor fact, the quotation that
goes against the grain, the unexpected that reveals.
The moment a person forms a theory, his imagination sees
in every object, only the traits which prove that theory.
- Thomas Jefferson
The only completely consistent people are the dead.
Writing is Thinking
I've realized that many people think writing is about
putting down on paper what you think, but I think it's often the process
of writing that allows you to realize what it is that you do think.
I am an obsessive rewriter, doing one draft and then another
and another, usually five. In a way, I have nothing to say but a great
deal to add.
Growth of Understanding
I write to understand as much as to be understood. Literature
is an act of conscience. It is up to us to rebuild with memories, with
ruins, and with moments of grace.
